@rtMolecule fashions in its own way

Specialists in tailored synthesis of organic molecules, Fabien Zunino and Omar Karam set up @rtMolecule in 2003. Having found accommodations in the biology-health pole, the two researchers got off to a promising start, and that was what was led to their convincing decision-makers of their project’s relevancy.

Paired destinies, a single purpose. Such might be the title of the story of Fabien Zunino and Omar Karam. Having made each other’s acquaintance at the University of Poitiers, they now follow a kindred path under the @artMolecule banner. Before their coming together in this adventure, “chance” had gone so far as to have them be neighbors in Parexel-Cemaf for several years. “It was quite exactly during that epoch that we had the idea of drawing up a common project”, comments Fabien Zunino.

In 2002, economic happenstance spurred their thinking. The restructuring of the American group compelled them to rebound in another setting. “We quickly went and presented our project to Pierre Gohar of the Poitou-Charentes Incubator, pursues the chemist. Soon enough, the dossier came before a jury, and so it was that in December 2002, our incubation got underway.” Dismissed in March 2003, the two musketeers officially created @rtMolecule … a few weeks later. That said, even though one event rapidly dovetailed into the next, Fabien and Omar do not believe they’ve gone too far too fast.

Achieved recognition

Quite on the contrary, the relevancy of their activity is acknowledged with unanimity. Tailored synthesis of organic molecules meets an increasing need of the pharmaceutical and the cosmetic industries, to begin with… “It’s simple, what we manufacture, from one milligram to ten grams, is not to be found in the catalogs”, summarizes the director. Winners in the “In emergence” category of the 2003 ANVAR nationwide contest placing at stake assistance furthering the creation of innovatory companies, the creators renewed their success in June 2004 in the “Creation-development” category.

In a perpetually evolving field, the financial aid granted by the ANVAR (the French agency for innovation) shall allow @rtMolecule to develop novel applications, particularly as regards the manufacturing of molecules (steroids, alkaloids…) in a superacid environment. A chemist’s translation: “Gain time” over the competition. Haven’t Zunino and Karam already set up a two-year R & D program in partnership with the laboratory of “Synthesis and reactivity of natural substances”. Isn’t that exactly where their tandem first got off the ground. A timely return to the sources that the long-standing co-captains wish to render instrumental.
